History
Kaipamangalam is situated approximately midway between Kodungallur and Triprayar. Historical accounts indicate that Tipu Sultan’s forces stayed in this region. During Tipu Sultan’s military campaigns, the Kacheriparambu at Koprakkalam in Kaipamangalam was used as a military camp. The place came to be known as Kacheriparambu because a military court of Tipu Sultan’s army functioned there.
Origin of the Name
It is believed that the name Kaipamangalam originated from Kappal Mandapam. Kappal Mandapam was the name traditionally associated with the area near Ayiroor where Westerners are believed to have landed their ships.
Historical records also refer to the place as Kappamangalam, meaning “the land of those who collected taxes (kappam).” The right to collect these taxes belonged to Vakkayil Kaimal, who was the ruler of the Ponnani region. Over time, the name Kappamangalam gradually evolved into Kaipamangalam.
