History

This place is situated approximately midway between Kodungallur and Triprayar. Historical records indicate that the forces of Tipu Sultan had stayed in this region. During Tipu Sultan’s military campaigns, Kacheriparambu at Koprakkalam in Kaipamangalam was used as a military camp. The name Kacheriparambu is believed to have originated from the fact that Tipu Sultan’s military court functioned there.

Origin of the Name

It is believed that the name Kaipamangalam originated from Kappal Mandapam. Kappal Mandapam was the name traditionally associated with the area near Ayiroor where Westerners are said to have landed their ships.

Historical records also mention the name Kappamangalam, meaning “the place of those who collected kappam (tribute/tax).” The right to collect this tribute belonged to Vakkayil Kaimal, who was the ruler of the Ponnani region. Later, the name Kappamangalam gradually changed to Kaipamangalam.
